What Is a DEXA Scan? Your Guide to Body Fat Tests in Kingston, Jamaica

If you’ve ever stepped on a bathroom scale and wondered what the number actually tells you, you’re asking the right question. Weight alone doesn’t say how much of you is muscle, fat, or bone — and for anyone training seriously, managing weight, or just curious about their health, that distinction matters. This is where a DEXA scan comes in: the most accurate body fat test available, and one of the core services we offer at Technique Lab in Kingston.

What Does a DEXA Scan Measure?

DEXA stands for Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. Originally developed to measure bone density. The same technology has become the gold standard for body composition analysis — giving you a precise breakdown of:

  • Body fat percentage — not just total weight, but how much of it is fat
  • Lean muscle mass — tracked separately for your arms, legs, and trunk
  • Bone density — useful for detecting early signs of osteoporosis or osteopenia
  • Visceral fat — the fat around your organs, which is a stronger health indicator than overall weight

A DEXA scan takes anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. It requires a 2-hour fast and no heavy exercise beforehand. The procedure involves lying still on a table while a low-dose scanner passes over your body.

DEXA Scan vs. Other Body Fat Measurement Methods

Most people have had their body fat estimated with calipers (skinfold testing) or a bioelectrical impedance scale (the kind built into some bathroom scales or handheld devices). Both have a place, but neither comes close to DEXA for accuracy:

  • Skinfold calipers depend heavily on the skill of whoever is measuring, and only sample a few points on the body.
  • Bioelectrical impedance scales estimate body fat from how electricity moves through your body — a method that’s easily thrown off by hydration levels, meals, or even time of day.
  • A DEXA scan images your entire body and separates fat, muscle, and bone directly, which is why it’s used as the reference method hospitals and researchers compare other techniques against.

If you’ve gotten different body fat percentages from different scales or trainers, this is usually why — and it’s the reason we built our testing around DEXA rather than estimates.

What to Expect During Your Body Fat Test at Technique Lab

We use a Lunar Prodigy DEXA system, the same technology used in clinical and research settings. Your appointment includes:

  1. A quick intake to confirm you’re a good candidate for scanning
  2. The scan itself (about 5 to 15 minutes, fully clothed, no needles or preparation)
  3. A full report breaking down your body fat %, muscle mass, and bone density
  4. A review with our Health Consultant, who walks you through what the numbers mean and, if you’re working on weight loss or performance goals, what to do next

We accept referrals from private and public medical practitioners, and many clients use their results alongside our training and nutrition consultation services.

How Often Should You Get a Body Composition Scan?

For most people tracking a fitness or weight-loss goal, every 8–12 weeks gives enough time for real changes to show up without over-testing. Athletes in-season, or anyone being monitored for bone density concerns, may test more or less frequently — your Health Consultant can advise based on your specific goals.
